Every explanation Nova gives comes in three styles. Switch between them per question — whichever gets a concept to click fastest.
A block slides down a rough incline (θ = 30°, μ = 0.2). You calculated a = 4.9 m/s² using g sinθ — and got it wrong. What did you miss?
You left out friction — it opposes the motion, so it subtracts from g sinθ. a = g(sinθ − μcosθ) ≈ 3.21 m/s².
Along the incline, gravity contributes g sinθ. Friction opposes relative motion, contributing −μg cosθ. Net: a = g(sinθ − μcosθ) = 9.8(0.5 − 0.173) ≈ 3.21 m/s². Your 4.9 m/s² is only correct if μ = 0.
Like sliding a book down a bare ramp versus a sanded one — the rougher surface always eats some of the acceleration you’d otherwise get from gravity alone.
