Before you can build a study plan, you need to know exactly what you are studying for. NEET UG has a specific structure — a fixed number of questions, a fixed number of marks, a fixed amount of time, and a marking scheme that punishes guessing differently than most exams students are used to. This is a full breakdown of the NEET 2027 pattern as it stands today, plus the one change from 2025 that quietly rewrote exam-day strategy for everyone.
A note on the date first: NTA has not announced an official date for NEET 2027 at the time of writing. NEET UG has historically been held on the first Sunday of May, so it is reasonable to expect NEET 2027 around early May 2027 — but treat that as an expectation, not a fact. The only source that matters for the actual date is nta.ac.in, and that is where you should check once the official notification is out.
The paper, at a glance
NEET UG is a single paper: 180 questions, 720 marks, 180 minutes, answered with pen and paper on an OMR sheet. There is no separate paper for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology — it is one 3-hour sitting covering all three.
Biology carries the most weight by far, which makes sense given it is effectively two subjects — Botany and Zoology — bundled under one label.

Every correct answer is worth +4. Every wrong answer costs −1. An unattempted question costs nothing.
Every question counts now — the 2025 change
For years, NEET gave you a small cushion. Each subject offered a couple of extra questions beyond what you actually needed to attempt, split across Section A and Section B, so you could quietly skip your weakest one or two questions per subject. From 2025 onward, that cushion is gone. The paper is 180 questions, and all 180 are compulsory — no optional section, no built-in escape hatch for your weakest topic.
This matters more than it sounds. It means there is no such thing anymore as "I'll just skip the questions from that one chapter I never got around to." Every chapter in the syllabus can now show up in a question you are required to attempt or consciously leave blank. Full syllabus coverage stopped being a nice-to-have and became the baseline.
The marking math — and what it means for guessing
The +4 / −1 scheme is simple to state and easy to get wrong in your head under exam pressure, so it is worth working through the actual numbers once, calmly, before exam day.
If you guess completely at random among four options with zero elimination, the expected value of that single guess is (1/4 × 4) + (3/4 × −1) = 1 − 0.75 = +0.25. Technically positive. But "expected value" is a long-run average across thousands of guesses — on a single 180-question paper, a string of unlucky random guesses can cost you real marks, and there is no way to average that out over just one attempt. That is the honest tension: the math tilts slightly in favor of guessing, but the variance on any single paper is real.
The picture changes a lot once you can eliminate even one option. Guessing among three remaining options: (1/3 × 4) + (2/3 × −1) = 1.33 − 0.67 = +0.67. Eliminate a second option and guess between the last two: (1/2 × 4) + (1/2 × −1) = 2 − 0.5 = +1.5. The practical takeaway isn't "always guess" or "never guess" — it's that partial knowledge is worth far more under this scheme than blind luck, so the highest-value skill isn't memorizing more facts, it's getting fast at ruling out wrong options on questions you don't fully know.
Subject split and where your minutes go
180 minutes across 180 questions works out to exactly one minute per question if you split time evenly. In practice, almost nobody should split it evenly. Biology questions are mostly direct recall — you either know the NCERT line or you don't, and re-reading it for the fourth time rarely helps. Physics and Chemistry numericals take longer to work through even when you know the method cold.
A common, sensible allocation is to move faster through Biology, where recall is either there or it isn't, and bank the saved time for Physics and Chemistry, where a single multi-step numerical can eat three or four minutes on its own. There's no single correct split; the point is to decide your allocation in advance, in a mock test, rather than discovering your pacing problems for the first time on exam day.
How to practice to this pattern, not just the syllabus
Knowing the syllabus is necessary but not sufficient. Practicing to the actual pattern means three things done consistently, not occasionally:
- Full-length, timed mocks under real 180-minute conditions — not chapter quizzes, not untimed practice, the whole paper at once so pacing problems show up before exam day instead of during it.
- Reviewing your negative marking outcomes specifically — not just "what did I get wrong," but "which wrong answers came from guessing versus a genuine concept gap," since those need different fixes.
- Practicing previous year questions chapter by chapter so you're calibrated to the real difficulty and phrasing NTA actually uses, not to how hard a random question bank feels. The CBT question — what's actually confirmed
You may have seen discussion about NEET moving to a computer-based test (CBT) format. As of now, this has been publicly discussed by exam authorities but is not confirmed. NEET UG remains pen-and-paper. Do not plan your preparation around a CBT shift until it is officially notified — check nta.ac.in directly for any update, rather than relying on secondhand reports.

180 questions, 720 marks, 180 minutes, +4/−1, all compulsory. Biology 90, Physics 45, Chemistry 45. That's the entire structural puzzle. The exam doesn't reward knowing more facts in isolation — it rewards pacing, honest self-assessment on when to attempt versus skip, and enough PYQ practice that none of this feels unfamiliar when you're sitting in front of the actual paper.
